ALLIES – defeat
The Battle of Somme was 1 of the largest battles in WW1. The number of casualties and the impact the battle of Verdun had on the French Army was the main reason Britain decided to launch another attack. Their aim was to take German pressure off of the French at Verdun. This battle had months of preparation with artillery planned at a higher intensity than had ever been seen on the battlefields before. The plan was to wear down the confidence in the German defenders (random attacks to catch them off guard), cut through the German defenses (barbed wire and fences) and destroy their front and rear trenches and supply routes. Even though they broke through the German barriers, the Germans were too secure in trenches and the Allies did not actually reach them and as a result, the Germans caused a lot of damage. In a battle that lasted a very short amount of time with little success, it involved approximately 2 million men on the Allied side, and they lost nearly 1 million of them.

FOCUS QUESTION RESPONSE: This battle brought about the improvement of many pre-existing artillery, especially guns. Aircrafts and communication between man on earth and man in flight also improved in the midst of this battle. This battle was one of the bloodiest and horrific battles in World War 1 but what came out of it were some incredible new technological advancements. That was the positives for the world in the years to come, but there were really no positive outcomes for the Allies at all in this battle. They lost so many men and because of the lack of involvement by the French because of their position in the Battle of Verdun, it goes to show how much the Allies relied on each other in WW1.
