1st battle: ALLIES – victory
2nd battle: ALLIES– defeat
3rd battle: ALLIES – defeat
Ypres was always under attack from the Germans as it was a key point in keeping them from the English Channel. The intention of the 3rd Battle of Ypres was to force the Germans to retreat from the main battlefront of Vimy – Arras. This battle was somewhat confusing because though the Germans stood victorious as they didn’t lose their ground, the constant downpour of rain and unceasing gunfire resulted in a muddy, swamp-like battlefield full of bodies. This ultimately saw the end of the attack and the Germans were crowned victorious. The Germans were also ‘1-up’ because they were fighting in concrete bunkers with truckloads of weapons such as mustard gas and machine guns. There was over 200,000 casualties as a result of this battle and little success for the Allies.

FOCUS QUESTION RESPONSE: Though the allies were defeated, they really had no hope throughout this entire battle. This went to show how the Allies went into something that they were not fully prepared for, even though luck was not on their side. They also lost thousands of troops.
